An archaeological watching brief, also sometimes referred to as archaeological monitoring, is a formal process where an archaeologist observes and records any potential archaeological deposits and finds during construction or development work on a site where a risk of disturbance exists. It acts as a preventative measure required by planning authorities to ensure any remains is documented without significantly disrupting the construction schedule. The process includes pre-agreed conditions, the archaeologist’s presence and monitoring of initial groundworks, and the production of a final report with an ordered archive of any discoveries.
A Written Statement of Investigation will be produced which will detail the works, which must be approved by the county archaeologist prior to any site works.
